Holistic Care & You

Holistic Therapies - What is that?

If you've ever tried a hot tea with honey and lemon or diffused essential oils at night to help your child sleep better, you've used a holistic remedy.  If you've ever visited a licensed acupuncturist and received acupuncture treatment, then you have experienced a method of holistic therapy.

What is holistic therapy?

Holistic Therapies are natural approaches to healing and wellness that are often employed as part of holistic treatment plan.  There are many different holistic therapies that you can explore and experiment with.  While some require professional help. Others like mediation, you can begin incorporating into your daily life.

Several popular therapies are: Acupressure, Acupuncture, Aromatherapy, Guided Imagery and Visualization, Hydrotherapy, Hypnosis, Medical Qu Gong, Reflexology, Reiki, Tai Chi, Yoga & Meditation.

Let's talk about a really easy and simple method of holistic therapy and this one is one of our favorites!

Aromatherapy - Aromatherapy uses volatile plant materials to alter the persons mind, mood & health.  The use of essential oils from plants for their medicinal & healing properties.  Consisting of botanical matter, may also be referred to as volatile or ethereal oils. Oils have many uses that include aromatherapy, pharmacology, food flavoring and perfumery. Extracted from plant roots, berries, seeds, leaves, and bark through a number of different ways.  Steam distilled, enfleurage, solvent extraction, expression, cold pressed.

  • Anxiety - Lavender, Myrrh, Bergamot, Chamomile, Cypress, Rose, Pine, Vanilla, Majoram, Neroli and Lime

  • Depression: Patchouli, Rosemary, Sandalwood, Angelica Seed and others

Finding Good Oils

The best way to find really good essential oil is to:

1. Ask for recommendations - typically getting word of mouth recommendations are great especially from folks you trust like friends or family.

2. Do your own research - Nothing works better than doing your own research, ask questions and learn how oils can work for you.

3. Know the storage practices - Knowing and understanding your oils makes all the difference in the world. Learn how the oils were extracted, where they come from, how they are sourced and whether they are synthetic or not (PLEASE make sure that the oils are pure and not synthetic, this really matters in not only the quality but the effectiveness of the oil)

4. Be label smart - READ the label. Google it, the company and get as much info as possible

5. You pay for what you get! - If you are paying $5 for your oils, you may want to be careful with them.  As with anything that is of good or great quality, you will get what you pay for.  If the quality is not good, the effectiveness will not be good either.  So always keep in mind, you get what you pay for.
